Surfing internet is what I do for the past 2 weeks. Look for jobs, check on news from Malaysiakini and petalingstreet, blog hopping, watch online videos, etc. Basically just wanna dig out news and find new stuffs.
Of all, Kaskus is the must-visit-forum from Indonesia. Yesterday I stumble upon this post ‘hidup seorang bocah tanpa wajah’. A story of Juliana Wetmore who was born with ‘no face’ in 2003.
Little Juliana is missing 30 – 40 percent of the bones in her face. “She has no upper jaw, no cheek bones, no eye sockets, and she’s missing the corner of her ear,” explains Tom. Her birth defect is called Treacher Collins Syndrome. Doctors say it’s the worst case they’ve ever seen. ~quoted from Kaskus.
I still can’t believe it is for real. How could someone born without bones on her face? How could it be.. Why.. Seeing her pictures has made my heart melted. Seeing her in person will be.. *speechless*
I think Juliana Wetmore’s story really wakes everyone up, to stop ranting about imperfectness of our faces. We should be happy because we have a normal face with bones. So what with tiny eyes or less pointed nose or untidy teeth and so on.
Forget about ranting that your friends making fun on you because you have a wide mouth. What is that compare to what you think Juliana Wetmore experienced? Not only she is missing 30% – 40% of her face’s bones, but also the function of some of the 5 senses. She has to eat through her stomach, and she has a trach to breathe.
Apart from that, this story makes me more afraid of having a kid in the future. ![]()

July 1, 2009 at 7:32 amI can’t help but feel sorry for her, thanks for posting this story. And I hope one day she will live a normal happy life without surgery. And or the technology will be good enough so she or many others can have a face they would have wanted.

August 10, 2009 at 4:45 amThe main thing that horrifies me is the physical pain and suffering this little girl must be undergoing.
But please don’t use her as an object lesson against vanity. She deserves so much more respect than that.

August 18, 2009 at 9:38 amJuliana is a beautiful child, bless her and her family and friends. I’ve read about people who do nothing but oppose the birth of this little angel, calling her ugly and horrid. Imagine if those people went through something that made their face look different, how would they feel being called ugly? She is like every other little girl her age, and she is a brave little girl in my eyes. :* ) Bless her.

August 28, 2009 at 3:41 amI saw this story on TV, and it just broke my heart! What a courageous little girl this is and it really does minimize the trivial things we complain about in life. She should be an example to everyone…to make the best of what you have been given and go forward in life! God bless her and her family!

October 14, 2009 at 1:44 amI’m really surprised that no one has addressed the question of “Is putting someone through the kind of life she must lead cruel?” If you had a pet, and that pet had a traumatic accident that did this to them, you wouldn’t hesitate to have them “put down” out of some sense of mercy.
“Human life is worth more” you say? Let’s flip that around a little – you’re saying you’re (much!) more willing to allow fellow humans to endure suffering than you would be a pet? It’s really pretty odd.

February 1, 2010 at 9:13 pmcruel?! really this little girl didnt have and accident and when she gets older im sure she wants a normal life. cruel would be to take that chance away from her and have her live with the cruel things children say. she may not have a face BUT SHE HAS A HEART!

October 16, 2009 at 8:11 pmWhy don’t her parents kill her? She is an abomination!

November 22, 2009 at 3:53 amAbominations come from WITHIN. You’re the type of person this world can do without.

November 23, 2009 at 6:27 amFor the same reason that your parents did not abort you, it’s call LOVE! but then you wouldn’t know what that is.

November 20, 2009 at 10:20 pmShe’s a beautiful little girl, her family loves her as if she was like her older sister! She is very young and doesn’t realize she looks different than others..it’s what’s on the inside not the outside. Technology is improving fast, she will look just like any other child in no time. I wish her and her family the best of luck! GOD BLESS

November 22, 2009 at 3:16 amNewt:
It isn’t the same, because a dog’s life is short and there is not much he can accomplish if he is in a great deal of pain.
This little girl’s life is not lessened or meaningless because of her disease. And you should be ashamed of yourself for thinking that she is worthless, that there is nothing redeemable about her life.
She can still be happy. Her life is redeemable, it’s WORTH IT to keep her alive.
And by the way, if my dog lost two legs in a car accident, I wouldn’t “put him down.” Maybe you would, but I’ve seen crippled animals living perfectly enjoyable lives – just as I’ve seen crippled humans living perfectly enjoyable lives.
Not only that, but those who have overcome great obstacles in their lives serve a purpose to the greater society – they inspire, they have perspective. Euthanizing human beings who are not perfect only perpetuates the idea that strife is not worthwhile, that we should give up everything and simply bow our heads whenever something goes wrong.
Let this little girl fight her battle, let her parents fight theirs. Don’t pass judgment on those who wish to fight, because you can’t understand the emotional torture they’re already suffering through.
Stop making dangerous assumptions just to further your agenda.

March 12, 2010 at 10:43 pmThey’re sort of playing god here.. Our technology is what keeps her alive.
But maybe our technology will advance to the point where, in her lifetime, they will be able to reconstruct her face if she wants that.
Frankly, i think she’s cute.
Let’s look at this rationally for a second instead of so emotionally (which i know about 90% of people have trouble doing). Her life is going to be very, very hard. People are going to be mean to her. She may not be able to take part in a lot of activities other kids do. She probably wont’ marry. This is unfortunate….
…. But to suggest that her parents kill her, as some idiot here suggested? Well, dude, murdering people is illegal and i can’t imagine her parents would want to do such a thing anyway. I’m sure they love her no matter what. Any half decent parent would.
AND.. it never said it affected her brain. She may be very, very smart yet. And if she is, her life will be as fulfilling as anyone’s could hope to be.

March 12, 2010 at 10:48 pmHere you all go:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treacher_Collins_syndrome
Here’s a short (admittedly wikipedia…) article on the disorder. As stated, it does not normally affect intelligence. And if you do a google image search, you can see it affects people to varying degrees. This case is quite severe by the looks of things.

June 2, 2010 at 12:22 pmwho needs normality anyways? I think that people calling her ugly and horrid is wrong. and wanting her to have a “normal” face? what is normal? is it all these fake women you see in covergirl magazines? This little girl is beautiful no matter what. We are all beautiful no matter what we look like in the eyes of others. I do pray that someday she wont have to be tormented for not looking quite like others.

August 26, 2010 at 10:49 amOmigoshhhh! This is soooooo sad! I hope she gets better!! I hear you can take a bone out of you thigh these days and put it in your face or something like that! Not saying that you should that, I myself thinks it’s WAYYYYY too riskyyy! I think she’s great just the way she issssss!
Her parents should be proudddd!
I look at myself in the mirror and think I could be sooooooo prettier (Knowing me, a teenager, 14 years old, all teenage girls say that) But after seeing this, I don’t know what I was thinkingggg! I should be thankful! Everyone should, including Juliana and her family. There could’ve been a posibility that she wouldn’t make ittt! But she did and it’s a miracle sent from heaven above! Bless you, Juliana!
