Update on Job Hunting (long entry)

March 19th, 2008 | Posted by wiehanne

“What are you doing here?” “What??? Looking for a job? Where? Here?”

That’s the almighty question that almost everyone-whom-I-know thrown to me yesterday, when they saw me at Limkokwing Uni.

Oh yea, of course, who won’t be curious seeing a graduate (an Indonesian) came back to the uni (in Malaysia). For sure one can’t be fly over the sea to visit the uni for the sake of having fun or recalling the good old time. But damn, getting the damn same question, giving the damn same answer and getting the damn same reaction can’t be more frustrating than being asked when are you going to get married. SIGH..

Well, yes, I’m here since 3 weeks ago for the Mission Impossible; job hunting. I have a very simple and clear objective which is to get a job (preferable Graphic designer) that is located within Puchong and Cyberjaya. Other locations are possible but not too far from the place I stay or else I have to invest alot in the transportation.

Any company will do as long as I can have my working permit. Nah, this is where the problem laid. Because not many companies can come out with the working permit for the foreigner staff. Even if they do, mostly is for the so called professional work, i.e. IT people, engineer, etc. Sadly, design and advertising isn’t in the professional’s category yet in Malaysia. SIGH.

What I’ve heard from someone-whom-I-know is that companies with MSC (Multimedis Super Coridor) status can apply the working permit. And again, most of them with MSC status is an IT company. Do mind map and we will see programmer, engineer, software bla bla bla. SIGH.

Of company with MSC status, is Limkokwing Uni, where I can see with my own eyes that there is so many foreigner staffs inside; China, Indonesia, Africa, Middle East, you name it. Whatever permit one will get from there (either student or working), it has the highest hope for the foreigner.

I myself has applied through jobstreet, the star newspaper, and LUCT itself. The only interview came from NexGen, LUCT. After weeks of calling back to follow up with the result, I still get no news. Until I decided to ask the lecturers about how and how. Cut it short, I went to meet Mr.Heng, CD of MDIC, yesterday.

An impromptu meet up with no good result. :( NexGen didn’t pass anything about me to him and he didn’t think he needed any graphic designer at the moment. *heart broken* Alright, so it’s not the end of the world yet. I suppose to go for an interview today but due to some reasons, I cancel it. Why? I need no explain.

There is so many things to consider if one want to look for a job here. The company’s location, the transportation, the place to stay, income and outcome, etc. Of course I want to have some saving from the monthly income and live a healthy life which is quite hard to achieve if I were to work in ads agency where time doesn’t exist.

Whatever. If I don’t get a job here, I’ll go back next Tuesday. That’s the deal with my parents. When Plan A doesn’t work, there is always Plan B. I will go back and continue do the freelance in design, blog for fun and money, and work out the new online project with the boyfriend. I hope to get myself an unlimited internet connection since most of the work is done online.

I will continue the life in Medan until who knows suddenly Mr.Heng realizes that he needs more designers and NexGen gives him my resume. :P Then I’ll fly to KL again and work for 1 or 2 year. If this scenario doesn’t happen, I’ll still continue the life in Medan until the boyfriend graduates (which is 8 - 9 months away) and we will look for a job in Singapore. Until then, I am sure I will have enough saving to support myself during the job hunting period.
